Hormones. That’s a loaded word, and we blame all sorts of things on these chemicals found in our bodies.
Whether you’re male or female, hormones play a big role in your physical well-being and the most innocuous factors that throw your hormones off-balance. Moodiness, weight gain and fatigue are just some of the symptoms you might experience when your hormones are out of whack.
Diet plays a very significant role in the hormonal system. In particular, eating a lot of sugar and processed food can cause trouble. For example, too much sugar can lead to insulin resistance.
While it’s good to know what to avoid eating, you can also choose certain foods to enhance hormonal function. There’s one type of food in particular that is known for having a positive impact. Saturated fats don’t have the best reputation, but its processed saturated fats that are problematic.
Healthy saturated fats are found in natural foods. Avocado, dark chocolate, coconut oil and ghee all benefit the endocrine glands, which produce hormones. Omega-3s and saturated fats are, in fact, very important for hormone function and balance. When the body doesn’t have enough healthy fat to make hormones, it has to use polyunsaturated fats that oxidize easily. This leads to inflammation, and inflammation triggers a host of unpleasant issues.
If you want to keep your hormones happy, try increasing your consumption of fish (omega-3!), butter from grass-fed cows, chia seeds and avocado.
